In Unity, can focus be switched among, say, an emacs window and any of
several xdvi windows, all side-by-side, all without reaching for the
mouse?  Can the xdvi windows go from floor to ceiling with no vertical
space lost to "bars"?  If so, please say, so that it's worth a try.
