[SGVLUG] asterisk with freePBX

I got this far. I have asterisk running with a freePBX web gui on fedora 
fc4.  freepbx seemed the way to go, because it looked easier, But it 
seems I am missing a lot of phone lore.  Has someone else got this far? 
Is there documentation somewhere or some helpful hints. 

I have a fxo card and a sip account. I have dreams, but missing 
something. Could I buy a metaphor?

Reallly at this point, it seems complex.
